Cultivating Happiness:

How to Proactively Protect Your Mental Well-Being

Mental well-being is the capacity for people to cope with stresses, learn and work effectively, and understand their abilities to live a meaningful life. While “good” mental well-being doesn’t mean you’re always happy, knowing how to cultivate happiness in your daily life is an important aspect of maintaining your overall mental health.

Everything may be OK now, but being proactive about cultivating happiness and protecting your well-being can help you build resilience and take better care of yourself when tough times do roll around.

Not sure where to start? Consider these tips to promote self-care and mental well-being all year round:

Tip #1: Hone in on the Positive

Did you know that focusing on negative aspects of life can actually harm your mental well-being? Although it’s easier said than done, the ability to train your brain to focus on positive moments can not only help with stress but give you a happier outlook on life.

This doesn’t mean faking a smile or pretending things are always okay. Rather, it’s about choosing to notice and appreciate the good parts of life.

Tip #2: Spend More Time with the People You Love

Supportive relationships are one of the most important sources of happiness in our lives. Think of how it feels to be connected to a circle of friends and family. Nurturing these relationships can promote happiness and improve your mental resilience.

Stay connected with friends and family, whether that’s by scheduling a weekly phone or video call, setting up a standing coffee or lunch date, or even trying a new hobby with like-minded people.

Tip #3: Live in the Moment

When people feel depressed or anxious, they tend to spend too much time thinking about negative aspects of life. This could look like dwelling on the past — or worrying about the future. If this sounds familiar, focusing on the present moment can help you feel more centered and make it easier to cultivate daily happiness.

Mindfulness meditation is all about practicing being fully present in the here and now. If the idea of sitting completely still sounds impossible, don’t worry! There are many different meditation techniques to help you stay in the moment. You could go on a daily walk, minimize screen time and multitasking, and even journal about what you’re grateful for or positive moments in your day.
